At Sikkim Diaries Tours & Treks, we offer responsibly curated journeys to this iconic lake, ensuring your trip is as safe and soulful as it is scenic.

Why Gurudongmar Lake is a must- visit?

  • Among the world’s highest freshwater lakes (17,800 ft above sea level)
  • Sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, and Sikhs
  • Snow-covered peaks year-round
  • Part of the source of the Teesta River
  • Ideal for landscape photography, spiritual reflection, and high-altitude adventure

The Legend of Gurudongmar

Named after Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), who is believed to have blessed the lake during his journey to Tibet in the 8th century, Gurudongmar holds immense spiritual value.

According to local beliefs:

  • The lake remained frozen year-round, making it inaccessible to locals and nomads.
  • The Guru touched one part of the lake, which has never frozen since—even in the harshest winters.
  • This unfrozen section is considered sacred, and many pilgrims carry its water back home, believing it brings health and prosperity.

Journey to Gurudongmar: Route & Itinerary

Reaching Gurudongmar is an adventure in itself, traversing winding mountain roads, high-altitude passes, and changing terrains.

Standard Route

Gangtok → Lachen (1 night) → Gurudongmar Lake → Return to Gangtok via Lachung & Yumthang Valley

  • Day 1: Drive from Gangtok to Lachen (~6–7 hrs), overnight stay
  • Day 2: Early morning drive to Gurudongmar (~3–4 hrs), spend 30–60 mins at the lake
  • Optional: Continue to Lachung for Yumthang Valley visit

Note: Because of the extreme altitude, we ensure gradual acclimatization, especially for senior travelers and children.

Important Travel Tips

  • Altitude Precaution: At 17,800 ft, AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is real. Rest well in Lachen and drink plenty of water.
  • Permits Required: Gurudongmar is near the international border; Indian nationals require a special permit
  • Foreigners are not allowed beyond Thangu due to security restrictions.
  • Temperature: Can drop to -10°C even in April — carry layers, gloves, and thermal wear.
  • Road Conditions: Rough in patches — 4×4 vehicles only. Our packages include fully insured SUVs and experienced local drivers.
  • Carry Snacks: Limited food options after Lachen. We provide breakfast packs for the early departure.

What to Expert at the lake

  • Mirror-like reflection of peaks on calm days
  • Wind-rippled water under open blue skies
  • Tibetan prayer flags fluttering at the lakeside
  • Unfrozen sacred spot, visible even in early spring
  • A small Buddhist shrine and army memorial nearby

Pro Tip: Sunrise visits are the most magical—clear skies, golden light, and fewer crowds.

Responsible Tourism at High Altitude

  • Gurudongmar Lake is located in a fragile alpine ecosystem. We urge travelers to:
  • Avoid plastic waste
  • Stay on designated paths
  • Respect army personnel and religious customs
  • Limit time at the lake to prevent health risks
  • Our treks and tours follow strict eco-guidelines and include oxygen support on request.
